RWA Packing List

23 Jul

First, in a very last minute decision (as in on the cutoff day), I signed up to go to this year’s RWA!  Fortunately it’s being held in Anaheim, CA, which makes it drivable for me.  It’s my first time going and I can’t tell you all enough how excited I am.  For those of you who don’t know what RWA is, it’s the biggest conference of the year for romance writers.  There’s workshops, luncheons, publisher’s parties, and the opportunity to mix and mingle with everyone who’s a fan of romance just like you.

So while I know many of the RWA attendees have already left/arrived, here’s a list of the things I’m bringing on my daily trek to the conference:

  • RWA agenda – Don’t wait to figure out which workshops you want to go to, use RWA’s handy agenda builder to create your schedule .
  • Literacy Autographing list – With over 400 authors going, print out the list and highlight the ones you want to meet.
  • Big purse/ laptop bag – there are handouts and goodies to take home and you don’t want to lose anything!
  • Laptop – Great for taking notes.
  • Phone – I’ll be using mine to tweet on.  I heard there’s a Wi-Fi charge, so I’d rather use my phone.
  • Camera – Don’t know about you, but I’m be super excited to meet my favorite authors and that’s going to need a photo.
  • eReader – You never know when you might have a few moments to spare and sharing whatever you’re reading is always a handy icebreaker.
  • Business cards – Keep in touch with all the other readers and authors you meet.  I designed mine just last week and they’re due to arrive today!
  • Water & snacks – To tide you over in between meals.
  • Sweater – As with all hotels, temps vary from room to room.
  • Pen/Paper – For taking notes, jotting down reminders, etc.
  • Cute heels – A girl’s always gotta look her best!
  • Bookplates, pens, other promo materials – I don’t have these just yet, but they’re great giveaways once you’re published.

Did I forget anything?  Let me know!  By the way, if you’re going, be sure to drop me a tweet at @kristynnichols—I’d love to meet you!

Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy Review

12 Jun

It’s here at last—a romance author’s review of the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy.  Originally, I was going to post a review for each of the novels, but after a questionable reaction to the first, I decided to read them all before posting.  As a writer, I’m not usually comfortable posting critical reviews of other romance novels.  It just feels wrong and mean to me.  That said, all this hullaballoo, an impassioned response to the subject-matter, and multiple inquiries as to what I thought of this book, prompted this post. So if you are Fifty Shades of Grey’s biggest fan, you might want to click back now.  I would like to point out that I went into this with an open-mind, wanting to like the books despite the warnings that there would need to be a serious suspension of disbelief.

As you may or may not know, the story was originally written as Twilight fan fiction (fan fiction is a story created using the characters if not the entire world of an established TV show/book/movie/etc.).  Having grown up writing a couple of my own fan fiction pieces (go Buffy!), I was interested to see how she was able to get this published with these roots.  In my opinion, there’s an intrinsic flaw in using characters created by someone else when publishing your own work.  Yes, their names are changed, but still.  If someone were to one day write fan fiction with the characters I created, I would be truly be thrilled and flattered.  However, all those happy feelings would rapidly circle the drain the second I heard they were trying to publish their work after a quick search-and-find name replace.  Now was it a direct funnel from Twilight over to 50 Shades?  No.  Christian wasn’t a vampire, but that’s what they call Alternate Universe fan fiction.  Ana, however, is a young, impressionable and klutzy young woman who literally falls into his office and proceeds to jump into a relationship without knowing all the facts.  What a coincidence.

The story follows young and innocent Anastasia Steele and her developing relationship with sexually experienced billionaire Christian Grey.  Essentially, she wants a normal “vanilla” relationship with Christian, but he can’t give her one.  I’ve read and heard so many people call this “groundbreaking” and “fresh.”  I don’t want to shock you too badly (as the book’s already apparently done so to many people), but erotica is not new!  BDSM is not new!

Maybe it’s that I’ve read novels where the author has done in-depth research into the BSDM world and done some research myself for a WIP, but the titles (dom, submissive, etc.) shouldn’t be used as an excuse or as an explanation for their actions.  He had a horrible childhood, so he’s a dominant?!  Umm, that’s not how it works.  Christian’s needs and desires shouldn’t be portrayed or treated like they’re a sickness.  I applaud that he was going to a therapist, but the novels made it sound like he needed to be cured.  People like what they like and as long as it’s safe, sane, and consensual, it’s OKAY.

Happy HEA Friday – Can’t Help Falling In Love by Bella Andre

10 Feb

Happy Happily Ever After Friday!  Seems like Friday took extra long to arrive this week, but it’s here.  Even better, The Vow comes out tonight!  I’ve also picked my weekend read and it’s by one of my favorite authors, the lovely Miss Bella Andre… It’s Can’t Help Falling in Love!  She sent me a copy a couple of weeks ago and I love, love, loved it!  Congrats on another amazing story!

Title: Can’t Help Falling in Love

Author: Bella Andre

Series: The Sullivans

Synopsis (from Amazon):

Gabe Sullivan risks his life every day as a firefighter in San Francisco. But after learning a brutal lesson about professional boundaries, he knows better than to risk his heart to his fire victims ever again. Especially the brave mother and daughter he saved from a deadly apartment fire…and can’t stop thinking about.

Megan Harris knows she owes the heroic firefighter everything for running into a burning building to save her and her seven-year-old daughter. Everything except her heart. Because after losing her navy pilot husband five years ago, she has vowed to never suffer through loving – and losing – a man with a dangerous job again.

Only, when Gabe and Megan meet again and uncontrollable flames of desire ignite between them, how can he possibly ignore her courage, determination, and beauty? And how can she deny not only his strong bond with her daughter…but the way his sweetly sensual kisses are challenging her to risk everything she’s been guarding for so long?

This winter, if one – or both – of them aren’t careful, they just might end up falling in love.

My Take:

Can’t Help Falling in Love is a perfect contemporary romance.  I was rooting for both Gabe and Megan by the end and their personalities perfectly suited one another.  Gabe was the epitome of sweet and sexy and he’s a firefighter, which makes him practically perfect ;)   His interactions with Summer were adorable. One of my favorite scenes was him teaching them to snowboard; I’d like to know where he was when I was trying to learn!  The pair had undeniable chemistry and their banter left me literally laughing out loud (and looking like a crazy lady at the gym).

Remember this is book 3 in the Sullivan Series so I’d recommend reading the others first—they’re fabulous!  Plus, you’ll be able to catch up with the characters from books 1 and 2 (Chase & Chloe and Marcus & Nico).

Buy it from Amazon here.

New and Naughty: Brawn by Laurann Dohner

27 Dec

It’s release day for Brawn, the latest in Laurann Dohner’s New Species series.  Yay!  I pre-ordered this novella a while ago and to my lucky delight, it downloaded early to my iPad last night. So in the wee hours of the morning I finished it with a grin on my face.  Brawn is book 5 in the New Species series and it just keeps getting better and better.  Fury (Book 1′s hero) is still my fave, but all of Laurann’s alpha males in the are up there on my list of swoon-worthy heroes.

Here’s the synopsis from Amazon:

One look at Brawn and Becca is wondering how he’d look without his clothes. Brawn is instantly attracted to Becca but has sworn never to touch a human female. They just aren’t sturdy enough and he likes his sex a little rough. He is shocked to learn he’ll be living with her when she refuses to leave her home. He is there to represent New Species and to learn about humans so maybe this will be a good educational experience. He just has to keep his hands off her.His good intentions go astray when they are kidnapped and locked together inside a cage. Brawn finds himself reliving a nightmare when he is once again subjected to breeding experiments at the hands of New Species’ enemies. They will use Becca to get what they want from him. Brawn will do everything he can to protect her but they only have each other to depend on while trying to survive.

If you’re into paranormal romance or if you just love a good story with a strong, alpha male, I’d try out this series.  Get Brawn here, or start reading the series with Fury here.  Personally, I’d read the series in order–it really builds on itself and you get to see your fave characters later on.

Naughty Nooner – Bitten in the Bayou by Selena Blake

15 Nov

A crazy morning led to a late lunch.  Here’s what I’m reading on my iPad today.

I enjoyed The Cajun’s Captive, book one in the Stormy Weather series so I’m anxious to dive into Bitten in the Bayou.  With werewolves and a Cajun accent, how can I go wrong?

Synopsis (from Amazon):  Jules and Andre Deveraux have been hired to find wildlife photographer Angelica Humphrey. She’s lost somewhere in the Louisiana bayou and there’s a hurricane brewing.Angelica has never met anyone like Jules or Andre and she’s instantly attracted. But she doesn’t have time to act on her desire because she has to get away from the ex-boyfriend who stalks her. They take her back to their cabin, offering her protection and shelter from the storm.

But Angelica quickly finds herself falling under their spell and they happily show her that if one Deveraux is good, two are infinitely better.

Pick up Bitten in the Bayou at Amazon.
